Top 10: Indonesian Yellowfin Tuna Fishery

"Don't you dare fall off this boat." That was the constant thought that Future of Fish team members had in the darkness. They were in the middle of the Flores Sea at 11 pm with fishers from Labuhan Lombok, Indonesia, in a tiny wooden fishing vessel. The team was getting to know the yellowfin tuna fishing community there as part of the mFish initiative, a public-private partnership launched in 2014 by the United States Department of State. The goals: make fishing more sustainable and improve fisher…

Sustainable Seafood Week Goes National

We are excited to announce that Future of Fish, our affiliate Flip Labs, and Village Fishmonger are producing a culinary-fueled celebration of responsibly sourced seafood! Sustainable Seafood Week National will bring chefs, fishermen, industry professionals, and fish fans together in cities across America. In response, they collaborated with Future of Fish to create Sustainable Seafood Week NYC. Last year the week kicked off…

Future of Fish Affiliate Receives B Corporation Certification

We're like proud parents on the day our kid made honor roll. Flip Labs, the company spun out of Future of Fish in September to bring our style of systems thinking to the non-fish world, has been named a B Corporation. Flip Labs was founded by CEO Cheryl Dahle explicitly to take the approach pioneered in four years of work in fisheries system reinvention and apply it to other systems. Discovering Traceability at the Honolulu Fish Auction

By Crystal Sanders Most Hawaiian vacations involve cocktails and beach time, but being a serious fish nerd I spent three early mornings at the Honolulu Fish Auction. I was there to meet a shipper who sent me tuna that a fishermen friend of mine had caught in Hawaii. I also wanted to see what happens when the buyer sets the price for individual fish based on quality instead of wholesalers setting the price that fishermen receive. The seafood supply chain has been notoriously opaque,…

How Business Leaders Can Drive Seafood Supply Chains Toward Sustainability

This article was originally posted as an op-ed on Triple Pundit as part of their ongoing Sustainable Seafood channel. In the last 10 years we’ve seen 25 of the top U.S. retailers make commitments to purchasing sustainable seafood. We’ve seen a lot less traction and follow-through on those commitments. The fact remains that there is not enough responsible fish—whether you define that as Marine Stewardship Council certified, Monterey Bay Aquarium green-listed, or some other eco-label—to satisfy current demand for fish. As a result, many companies are defaulting on their promised timelines, or…

What’s Current in Seafood: The Industry Perspective

This is a preview. See the full infographic here. The Seafood Expo North America (SENA) is probably the only event in the country where you can walk down one aisle of booths and shake hands with a refrigerated boxcar expert, an oyster shucking champion, a sculpture artist, a high-efficiency pump engineer, and a technician specializing in shrink wrap. The largest seafood trade show on the continent, SENA offers the unique opportunity to meet and mingle with people from every possible facet of the seafood industry: fishers, distributors,…
