Global fisheries

The challenge

Globally, the ocean and its resources are being depleted, polluted and over-exploited endangering the livelihoods of millions. Many groups — governments, development banks, philanthropy, NGOs — are working hard to reverse this issue, with a significant focus on blue-food production. But, a majority of investments are falling short of creating impactful change on the water.

We need to find more efficient and effective ways to:

  • engage and innovate with blue food producers to…
  • incentivize the adoption of better business practices enabled by…
  • access to the resources needed to facilitate the transition.

What we do

At Future of Fish, we create and deploy targeted, innovative, market-based solutions to support the transition to sustainable blue food production. By forming long-term partnerships with local stakeholders, we work with their trusted relationships to create contextually appropriate place-based solutions to benefit coastal communities.

We create pathways for finance & service providers...

By designing solutions with:

  • funders & investors to de-risk and deploy capital on their terms; and
  • technology, business service, and business support providers to effectively and efficiently deliver their products and services.

...to support localized transformation.

By partnering with:

  • civil society and governments to advance conservation and socioeconomic improvements;
  • blue food producers to strengthen their businesses for profitability and sustainability; and
  • industry and markets to increase supply of responsible and sustainable products.

When we identified the opportunity to support wild-capture fisheries with a strong social impact, we knew it was a project worth backing. Although such investments come with inherent risks, we teamed up with Future of Fish to leverage on their expertise in this challenging sector. Their insights were invaluable, helping us to validate and strengthen our approach, providing clear recommendations to enhance sourcing and monitoring practices while supporting fishers and their communities. Future of Fish truly embodies the spirit of sustainable investment." —Daniel Amézquita, Investment Officer, Oikocredit
"Future of Fish's (FoF) involvement with two fishing cooperatives has been crucial in addressing organizational strengthening needs, helping us identify key areas for improvement in economic management, financial management, and access to external credit. The support from FoF to assess and address the organizational and administrative needs has empowered our cooperative boards to manage their finances more effectively. We're truly grateful for their expertise and we look forward to continuing this collaboration." — Carlos Gilberto Torrescano Castro, Pronatura Noroeste AC
