Exploring finance strategies to empower cooperatives in Mexico

We are excited to announce the launch of a project in partnership with Builders Initiative, to develop strategies to enhance the competitiveness and resilience of artisan fishing cooperatives in Baja Sur, Mexico. This initiative reflects our shared commitment to fostering sustainable fishing practices and supporting local communities reliant on small-scale fisheries.

Fisher cooperatives in Baja Sur are essential to the livelihoods of many local communities and play a critical role in the region’s economy and food security. Artisanal fishing is not just an economic activity but also an integral part of the cultural heritage of many coastal communities in the region, with traditional fishing practices and knowledge passed down through generations. However, these cooperatives face a myriad of challenges that hinder their growth and sustainability. From fluctuating market demands and seasonal fishing patterns to environmental uncertainties and limited access to financing, the obstacles are significant. Moreover, many cooperatives lack the necessary working capital and resources to invest in improvements that could enhance their operations and resilience.

To address these pressing challenges, Future of Fish, in collaboration with our local NGO partners, will conduct a comprehensive assessment of the financing needs of these cooperatives. Our work will focus on identifying innovative financing mechanisms and risk mitigation tools tailored to the unique circumstances of the fishing industry in Baja Sur.

Our overarching goal is to identify and develop financing strategies that not only bolster the financial health of these cooperatives but also encourage sustainable business practices. By understanding their working capital and capital expenditure needs, we can propose financial solutions that align with sustainability goals. This includes financing mechanisms that incentivize the adoption of environmentally friendly practices, such as responsible fishing techniques and sustainable resource management.

The impacts

This project aims to deliver several key impacts:

Enhanced competitiveness

By aligning financing strategies with the needs of cooperatives, we hope to empower these organizations to sustainably improve their operational efficiency, increase profitability, and better navigate the challenges posed by environmental and market fluctuations.

Strengthened resilience

The identification of risk mitigation tools will help cooperatives better prepare for and respond to unexpected challenges, ensuring their long-term sustainability and ability to thrive in an evolving marketplace.

Knowledge sharing

The project will result in a comprehensive report outlining the identified challenges, proposed financing strategies, and case studies of successful implementations. We will share this knowledge with cooperatives and their partners, fostering a collaborative approach to problem-solving and capacity building.

Community engagement

By socializing our findings and engaging with stakeholders throughout the project, we aim to create a sense of ownership among cooperatives and investors alike, demonstrating the demand for innovative financing solutions in the sector.

Supporting conservation and sustainable resource management

Our commitment to the fishing communities of Mexico extends beyond this project. By focusing on sustainable business practices, we aim to enhance the long-term viability of these cooperatives. Financial strategies developed through this project will be designed to not only improve profitability but also support conservation and sustainable resource management efforts.

Through our partnership with organizations like Pronatura Noroeste, Comunidad y Biodiversidad (COBI), and COMEPESCA, we are well-positioned to ensure that the financial strategies we propose are not only effective but also contribute positively to the environment and the well-being of these communities.

As we embark on this journey, we are excited about the potential to transform the landscape for small-scale fishers in Mexico. We are committed to driving meaningful change and supporting the future of sustainable fishing practices in the region.
